DEAR DADDY

In dedication to our beloved Vietnam War Veterans
Mother hurriedly lit my six candles
on the day Saigon fell.
She embraced me and your portrait,
whispering: “Dad used to say war was hell.”
Mother asked if I liked to learn English
“'cause your Dad was a handsome American;
He died bravely in a fierce battle
on the hills or down the valleys on Khe Sanh.
He came to Vietnam from America
where he Statue of Liberty stands,
helping the South stop the North
from stealing the precious piece of lands.”
Mother died in the rain at a labor camp
'cause there was no food or medicine.
She was caught for “escaping to America”
where you, Daddy, were growing.
I was left a living outcast –
tears dried from missing you, Mom, Dad –
holding onto your spirits each day:
That's all your child has had.
I secretly heard on the short wave
your name is on the Viet Veteran Wall.
Proud of you, Dad!
You had died for Freedom and Justice for all.

Việt-hóa bài “Dear Daddy” của LINH tại bức tường

Thắp vội cho con sáu ngọn cầy
(Sài Gòn thất-thủ đúng hôm nay!)
Con và ảnh bố ôm vào ngực,
“Giặc!” Mẹ thì-thầm: “Bố ghét cay!”
Mẹ hỏi: Con ưng học tiếng Anh?
“Bố con là Mỹ – một hùng-binh:
Đèo cao, lũng thấp, Khe Sanh nọ
Ngang dọc sa-trường, chết liệt-oanh!
Từ xứ tôn thờ Thần Tự-Do –
Hoa-Kỳ – Bố đến Việt Nam ta
Giúp Miền Nam chống quân Miền Bắc
Vào cướp quê mình – đất gấm hoa!”
Gục dưới mưa dầm, trại khổ-lao,
Mẹ qua đời: thiếu thuốc, cơm, rau!
Chỉ vì “vượt biển” mong qua Mỹ –
Nơi Bố sinh-thành – Thảm biết bao!
Từ đó, đời con sống bạt-phiêu,
Khóc thương Bố+Mẹ, lệ khô triều!
Hằng ngày chỉ biết trong tâm-tưởng
Khấn-nguyện linh-hồn Bố+Mẹ yêu!
Lén mở nghe tin tự nước ngoài:
Danh thơm của Bố khắc linh-đài .
Tự-hào: con có cha – là Bố
Vị-Nghiã hy-sinh cứu mọi người!
